Work Log - 2026-10-17
🎯 Focus for Today¶
First worklog here in a while. Today is mostly tidying up the ledger and parking things properly. The whole operation is going into maintenance mode for the next six months or so, because John got a contract.
✅ What Got Done¶
- Freshened up the SMUNZ ledger: mid-month Akahu/ANZ reconciliation merged
(ledger MR !39), balance assertions clean, runbooks reorganised under
docs/runbooks/. The startmeup.nz operating-costs page now shows the 13 October snapshot. - OpenCollective side of the reconciliation parked where it stands — the
oc-opsdevnzwork on matching OC transactions against what appears in the ANZ bank account didn't quite get there, and the RAMP project is postponed, likely not to restart before Q2 2027 at the earliest.
🧠 Notes & Reflections¶
- We're taking the NIMHQ project off the SMUNZ books. NIMHQ is basically the legacy version of SMUNZ — JB started working on it about 30 years ago in a different hemisphere and a very different world. We've, uh, learned a few things since then. Those costs still exist but will shift back to personal expenses.
- We're hoping to find a new director for SMUNZ — John's paid work is now more closely associated with OpsDev.nz, and we'll keep building the SMUNZ ledger.
- Looking at organising a "Hardware Freedom Day" event, and heading to Kawaiicon and various other events. An informal SMUNZ board meeting gets organised around the same time — lunch spot is already booked.
- We'll try to do what we can and will be looking for some volunteer help in the meantime.
- Almost at a 0.1.0 relase for akahu-opsdevnz module, our Akahu client. It's sitting in our private Ledger repo, but we are using to fetch transactions.
But hey hey — SMUNZ is here to stay. John's employment secures this, and there will be a trickle of funding going back into the project soon.
⏳ Mañana¶
- Maintenance mode: keep the bank reconciliation ticking over monthly while the contract runs.
- Keep an eye out for volunteer help and director candidates.
